Abstract THE PRESENT INVENTION PROVIDES A PROCESS FOR IMPROVING THE (1) THICKENING AND/OR (2) THIXOTROPIC PROPERTIES OF CERTAIN COLLOIDAL SILICAS. SAID PROCESS BROADLY COMPRISES FLUID ENERGY MILLING OF CERTAIN COLLOIDAL SILICAS HAVING BET-N2 SURFACE AREAS OF LESS THAN ABOUT 300 M.**2/GRAM. THE THUSLY TREATED SILICAS ARE FOUND TO BE USEFUL IN THE PRODUCTION OF GREASES AND SAG RESISTANT GEL COATINGS.
