Abstract GRAPHITE AND ARTICLES MANUFACTURED THEREFROM MAY BE FLUORIDIZED TO AN EXTENT HITHERTO UNATTAINABLE BY SUBJECTING THE GRAPHITE TO REPEATED FLUORIDATION CYCLES UNTIL THE DESIRED DEGREE OF FLUORIDE PENETRATION IS ACHIEVED. EACH FLUORIDATION CYCLE COMPRISES THE STEPS OF (A) DEGASING THE GRAPHITE UNDER VACUUM, (B) CONTACTING THE GRAPHITE WITH FLUORINE GAS UNDER REDUCED PRESSURE AND AT AN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE, AND (C) REMOVING THE FLUORINE GAS FROM CONTACT WITH THE GRAPHITE.
