Abstract THIS SPECIFICATION DESCRIBES A SCANNER FOR MEASURING THE COORDINATES OF POINTS ON A THREE-DIMENSIONAL SURFACE. IT INCLUDES A SURFACE CONTACTING PROBE AND A CLOSED-LOOP PROBE POSITION CONTROL FOR ADJUSTING THE PROBE AND FOR MAINTAINING A PREDETERMINED PRESSURE ON THE PROBE WHILE RECORDING THE COORDINATE DATA. UNIVERSAL MOVEMENT OF THE PROBE PERMITS A PROPER CONTROL RESPONSE REGARDLESS OF THE DIRECTION OF THE NORMAL TO THE SURFACE AT THE POINT BEING MEASURED.
