Abstract

Abstract Enclosure temperatures are modulated by water heated by solar energy and cooled to ambient air. Control means include moving exterior insulation, enclosing or exposing the water, using forced air, and providing special means for heat storage and transfer. Water ponds horizontally disposed atop the enclosure, or in floor plenums and frequently in direct thermal exchange with underlying space, or water circulating in walls by thermosiphon action may be used separately or in combinations with the control means.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 165 words
An apparatus for influencing the temperature of interior space within at least a partial enclosure formed with an exterior wall through which thermal transfer between interior space and exterior space is controlled by having in combination: a. a liquid thermosiphon confined within said exterior wall by heat transfer materials which form at least a portion of the interior space-contacting surface of said wall and at least a portion of the exterior space-contacting surface of said wall; b. a fixed thermal barrier of closed cell plastic located intermediate said interior and exterior space-contacting surfaces of said wall and forming said liquid thermosiphon into two thermosiphon legs, one each side of said fixed thermal barrier which retards equalization of teMperature in said thermosiphon legs when a substantial temperature differential exists between said interior and exterior space-contacting surfaces of high thermal transfer in thermal exchange with said thermosiphon; and c. at least one flexible liner within said wall and confining the body of liquid forming the liquid thermosiphon.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 102 words
The apparatus of claim 1 in which a movable thermal barrier is provided with means for support and for moving said movable thermal barrier from a first position substantially covering the outer surface of said thermosiphon portion to retard heat exchange between unconfined ambient air and said outer surface and thereby retarding thermosiphon action in said wall portion, to a second position where said thermal barrier leaves said outer surface exposed to said ambient air so that any temperature differential between said ambient air and said space in contact with said inner surface is free to establish thermosiphon action within said wall.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
The apparatus of claim 1 in which said liner is formed in a manner allowing said two thermosiphon legs to open into a horizontally disposed basin of said liquid of substantially greater horizontal surface area than the horizontal cross-sectional area of said thermosiphon portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 102 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which a movable thermal barrier is provided with means for support and for moving said movable thermal barrier from a first position substantially covering the outer surface of said thermosiphon portion to retard heat exchange between unconfined ambient air and said outer surface and thereby retarding thermosiphon action in said wall portion to a second position where said thermal barrier leaves said outer surface exposed to said ambient air so that any temperature differential between said ambient air and said space in contact with said inner surface is free to establish thermosiphon action within said wall.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 152 words
In the process for raising and lowering the temperature of interior space within at least a partial enclosure by means of bidirectional heat exchange through an external wall of said enclosure, the improvement which comprises exchanging heat between said interior space and a fluid in a first portion of a thermosiphon, said first portion being on one side of a fixed thermal barrier preventing substantial heat transfer through said wall except by thermosiphon action, moving said fluid by thermosiphon action to the opposite side of said fixed thermal barrier, transferring heat to the exterior surface of said wall and controlling heat exchange between said exterior surface and space external of said enclosure by moving a second thermal barrier from a first position in which it prevents heat exchange between said exterior surface and space external of said enclosure when exterior conditions are other than conducive to heat flow in the desired direction.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 70 words
In the process of claim 5 the improvement which comprises cooling said interior space by transferring heat from said interior space by thermosiphon action to said exterior surface and controlling the loss of heat therefrom by moving said second thermal barrier from said first position, when exterior conditions are not conducive to outward flow of heat, to said second position, when exterior conditions are conducive to outward flow of heat.
