Abstract
Abstract INFORMATION BITS ARE ARRANGED IN SUBSETS ACCORDING TO CERTAIN RULES AND A CHECK BIT IS GENERATED FOR EACH SUBSET. THE BITS ARE TRANSMITTED IN BLOCKS, EACH BLOCK CONSISTING OF INFORMATION BITS CHOSEN FROM DIFFERENT SUBSETS AND A CHECK BIT. AT THE RECEIVING END OF THE SYSTEM, A "SYNDROME" IS GENERATED WHICH INDICATES WHETHER ANY ERRORS HAVE OCCURRED AND IF SO THE BITS WHICH ARE IN ERROR. THE TYPE OF SYMMETRY EXHIBITED BY THE SYNDROME INDICATES WHICH BLOCK HAS ONE OR MORE ERRORS AND IN RESPONSE TO THIS INFORMATION AND TO PARTICULAR SYNDROME BITS THE ERRORS AUTOMATICALLY ARE CORRECTED.
