Abstract DATA PROCESSING APPARATUS RESPONDS ON A FREELY ASSIGNABLE BASIS TO EACH PERIPHERAL TRANSFER INSTRUCTION RECEIVED FROM ANY ONE OF A PLURALITY OF PROCESSORS, AND ESTABLISHES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE SYSTEM MEMORY AND THE SPECIFIED PERIPHERAL DEVICE. THE APPARATUS ASSIGNS A READ-WRITE CONTROL CIRCUIT AND ASSIGNS A PLURALITY OF TIME SLOT INTERVALS, COLLECTIVELY OR INDEPENDENTLY, TO PROCESS EACH REQUEST IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TRANSFER RATE OF THE PERIPHERAL DEVICE.
