Abstract A COMBINATION OF A POLYACRYLATE AND AN ACRYLATE-ACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER IS USED TO BENEFICIATE BENTONITE BUT FLOCCULATE OTHER CLAYS IN LOW-SOLIDS DRILLING FLUID. BOTH POLYMERS HAVE MOLECULAR WEIGHTS ABOVE ABOUT 2 MILLION BUT BELOW ABOUT 20 MILLION. A PROCESS USING A DILUTION STEP MAKES POSSIBLE APPLYING THE POLYMERS TO HIGH-SOLIDS MUDS.
