Abstract

Abstract A selectively variable length of the leading end portion of a rolled web of separator material, such as waxed paper, is advanced into underlying relation to the patty discharge station of a food-molding machine and is severed to form a separate sheet which intercepts the patty dropped thereon so that the patties in an accumulated stack of patties are separated from one another. A crimping roller transversely corrugates the web before it is severed to lend it beam strength so that thin, inexpensive web materials can be used, and to minimize contact with the patty so that there is less of the usual tendency of the patty and separator sheet to stick together.

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 198 words
In a food-molding machine which discharges successive articles to descent by gravity along a predetermined path, a frame including web-supporting means straddling said path, webadvancing means mounted on said frame for moving an elongate continuous web of material endwise toward said web-supporting means, web cutting means mounted on said frame intermediate said web-supporting means and said web-advancing means for transversely severing said web, and drive means for sequentially operating said web-advancing means and said web cutting means so that the web is severed subsequent to the time the leading end portion of the web is engaged with said web-supporting means, said drive means comprising a rotatable drive plate having a first drive surface in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation and a second drive surface in a plane inclined relative to said first drive surface, a drive roller arranged to selectively frictionally engage said drive surfaces, means for adjusting the relative interspacing of said drive plate and said drive roller so as to regulate the point along said inclined drive surface at which said roller initially contacts and is driven by said latter surface, and means for drivingly connecting said drive roller to said web-advancing means.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 94 words
In a food-molding machine of the type wherein a web of paper is fed by rolls to a position beneath successive falling articles and the web is severed by a traveling knife at each article; the improvement comprising a rotating shaft, a knife position control cam driven by said shaft, cam follower means connected to the knife, a platelike member on said shaft having a partial circumference friction driving surface, a drive roller positioned in the path of said friction driving surface, and drive means between said drive roller and the web feed rolls.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 94 words

Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The molding machine of claim 2, wherein the driving surfaces of said platelike member and drive roller are complimentary frustoconical surfaces.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The molding machine of claim 3, wherein the frustoconical surface of said platelike member is roughened.
