Abstract
Abstract A DEVICE CAPABLE OF BEING REMOTELY CONTROLLED TO MEASURE THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF SEDIMENT IN AN AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT IS DISCLOSED. A CONSTANT TORQUE IS INDUCED BY A MOTOR THROUGH A KINETIC ENERGY DEVICE, SUCH AS SPRING VANES, INTO A PADDLE ON THE END OF A OIL PRESSURIZED SHAFT. WHEN THE BOTTOM SEDIMENT RESISTS THE TORQUE THE POTENTIOMETER MONITORS THE RELATIVE ROTATION BETWEEN THE MOTOR ROTATION AND THE SHAFT PADDLE. THE TORQUE APPLICATION RATE, THE YIELD POINT, THE STRAIN RATE, AND THE ULTIMATE SHEAR OF THE SEDIMENT CAN BE RECORDED.
