Abstract

Abstract 1,188,863. Differential gears; casings; lubricating. HERWAYTHORN S.A. 1 July, 1968 [25 July, 1967], No. 31398/68. Heading F2D. In a motor vehicle differential gear arrangement, wherein a transmission shaft 3 carrying a differential cage driving pinion 6 is mounted in bearings 9, 10 respectively adjacent and remote from the pinion 6, adequate lubrication of these bearings is ensured by providing one side of the differential gear housing with two arcuate channels 12, 13 which open independently in the housing interior, are separated by a common horizontal partition 14, and communicate with a hollowed-out portion 11 of the housing situated between the bearings. The partition 14 has symmetrical lips 15, (16) where the channels open into the housing interior, the arrangement being such that whichever elements 12, 13 is uppermost in operation, oil is projected into the upper of the channels and returns through the lower channel, the cross-section of the channel being reduced in the vicinity of the bearings so as to provide a constriction to reliably ensure bearing lubrication. An internal partition within the hollowed out portion 11 causes the oil to move more towards the remote bearing 10. The arrangement is particularly suitable for hypoid drives, the lubrication of the bearings being ensured with the shaft 3 either above or below the differential cage axis. The oil may be projected by a rotating part of the differential, a part driven thereby, or, as shown, the differential cage crown-wheel rim 5.
