Abstract

Abstract 1,231,309. Bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 21 Aug., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 41673/69. Heading F2A. A rolling bearing 10 is lubricated by having the inner race formed of at least two coaxial members 18, and 20 which abut one another, the abutting surfaces being shaped to form an annular oil pocket 23 and an annular slit 25 which connects the pocket to the inner raceway there being provided at least one annular recess 27 so that in use oil is supplied from the recess via the pocket and the slit and discharged into the inner raceway. The members of the inner race may be provided with integral flanges 22 which define radial passages extending from the recess to the pocket. Oil is fed to the recess 27 via ports 28 which open into the interior 30 of the hollow shaft 11. Oil flows or is pumped along the shaft and accumulates in the pocket 23. On rotation of the shaft oil is forced outwardly by centrifugal action through the slits. The slits are such as to restrict the flow of oil so that it is forced out around the complete periphery of the slit. In an embodiment suitable for a roller bearing (Fig. 2, not shown) the inner race is made up of three members (41 and 42) one of which provides the raceway and the other two serve as axial abutments for the rollers. Two annular slits are provided, one at each end of the rollers. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) passages are prvoided so as to lubricate the surfaces of the inner race and the separator (60) of the rolling bodies.
