Gearshift lever assemblies

Abstract

Abstract 1,147,301. Change-speed control. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 3884/67. Heading F2D. In a motor-vehicle change-speed control having a gearshift-lever 10 pivotally mounted by an intermediate ball-and-socket connection 12, 24, in a turret housing 14 of a gear-box 18 (not shown), the metal ball 12 of the lever 10 is spherically seated in a one-piece annular polyurethane socket 24 which is a snap on fit on the pivot ball 12 and retained within the turret 14 by an external flange 34 on the socket engaging a groove 22 in the turret housing 14 such that the socket 24 is held seated with slight pressure against an internal turret flange 16. An axial projection 36 on the socket 24 engaging a slot 38 in the internal turret flange 16 (Fig. 4, not shown) prevents relative rotation between the turret 14 and socket 24, the latter 24 of which may additionally be formed with a pin 40 engaging a slot 42 in the ball 12 to similarly prevent relative rotation therebetween. The pin 40 may be formed integrally with the plastics socket 24 or may be a metal pin moulded in the socket which additionally is formed with a lubricant reservoir 30 and has a flared mouth 32 to facilitate the snap-fitting of the socket 24 to the ball 12. The turret 14 is similarly chamfered at 20 to facilitate fitting of the ball- and-socket assembly. In addition to the external flange 34, the socket may have one or more lateral projections which are axially spaced from the flange 34 and fit into respective retainer recesses in the turret housing.
