Abstract

Abstract 1,011,722. Applying tear strips to wrappers. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. June 13, 1962 [June 14, 1961; Feb. 22, 1962], Nos. 21434/61 and 6983/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions B5 and B6] Tear-strips are cut transversely from a web T (Fig. 1A) and are carried into contact with a continuously moving web W by a rotary device 19. In the form shown the rotary device 29 carries a blade 13 which co-operates with a fixed blade 12 to sever the tear strips from the intermittently advanced web T. A suction head S mounted on an arm 16 oscillated about a pivot 17 on the member 19 by a fixed cam 22 then carries the severed tear strip into engagement with the web W and presses it against an electric heating device 37 which is oscillated about the shaft of the member 19 as the tear strip is secured to the web W. The securing may be by heat sealing, or by drawing a stripe of adhesive applied by a wick 2b against which the web is pressed by a projection 2a on a roller 2. The rotary device 19 may be heated. In an alternative arrangement shown in the drawings of the first Provisional Specification (not shown), the oscillating carriage 37 for the heat sealing device is replaced by an arcuate guide adjacent the rotary member 19 and separated from the web by an endless belt moving at the same speed as the web. In this arrangement two knives 13, and two suction carriers S are mounted on the rotary member 19. When the spacing of the tear strips is to be increased a pair of mutilated rollers 5, 6 may cause the portion of web which is receiving a tear strip to travel at a higher speed than the remainder of the web, thus forming loops in the web before the main feed rollers 7, 8 so that the average speed of the web may be lower than the peripheral speed of the head S carrying the tear strip. In this arrangement the web slips on the roller 2. A brake 1a on a feed roller 1 maintains the tension in the web. The heating member may include an element 36 (Fig. 3A) fed with electric current and pressed by spring-biased plungers 45 against the web. The element 36 is tensioned by a spring 42 biasing its carrier 43 about a hinge 41.
