A CHARGED PARTICLE BEAM CONDENSER APPARATUS INCLUDING, MEANS FOR DECREASING THE CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF A STREAM OF CHARGED PARTICLES BY AT LEAST A FACTOR OF 10 OVER A LENGTH OF BEAM TRAVEL IN EXCESS OF ONE FOCUSING WAVELENGTH, SAID MEANS FOR DECREASING THE BEAM CROSS SECTIONAL AREA INCLUDING MEANS FOR DIRECTING AN INCREASING BEAM FOCUSING FORCE ONTO THE PARTICLES OF THE BEAM, AND THE FOCUSING FORCE BEING PROGRESSIVELY INCREASED AS THE CROSS SECTION OF THE BEAM IS DECREASED WHEREBY THE BEAM MAY BE CONDENSED TO A RELATIVELY HIGH CURRENT DENSITY WITHOUT INTRODUCING EXCESSIVE PERTURBATIONS THEREIN.
