Laminated structures
Abstract
Abstract 927,751. Laminates and laminating. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. June 9, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 19682/59. Class 140. A substantially rigid, lightweight, reinforced structure is made by cutting a sheet of a foamed polymer having a strong adherent flexible sheet of covering material on one or both sides into a plurality of strips of substantially equal width, turning the strips to expose the freshly cut surfaces and bring the other surfaces into facing relationship, applying an adhesive to at least one of each pair of facing surfaces and pressing them into contact. As shown, a foamable polystyrene composition, containing pentane, is extruded from an orifice 22 into the nip of rollers 26 which cool the surface and provide a smooth surface. Sheets of paper from rolls 35 are heated by means not shown and applied by rolls 32 to the polystyrene while they are still at a temperature above its melting point, so bonding them to the foamed layer. The laminate then passes through a steam chest 38 in which the foamed layer is further expanded. It is then cut by the saw blades 42 into strips which are turned by the fingers 45, and have adhesive applied to them by fingers 46. They are pressed together by rollers 48. Paper sheets 52 and 52a are coated with adhesive by the rollers 54 and 54a and pressed on to the top and bottom surfaces of the reinforced sheet by rollers 56 and platens 58. The product is then delivered to a cutting station (not shown). Alternatively, the foamed polymer may be a polymer of a homologue of styrene, or of styrene containing a nuclear halogen substituent, a mixture of such polymers, an interpolymer of styrene, a homologue of styrene or a halostyrene with another vinylidene monomer, a mixture of one of these polymers with another polymer, or a graft polymer obtained by polymerising styrene, a homologue of styrene or a halostyrene in the presence of a rubbery diene polymer. The covering flexible material may be paper reinforced with a thermoset synthetic resin, e.g. melamine-, urea- or phenol-aldehyde condensation product, metal, a flexible synthetic resin, e.g. polystyrene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, a glass-fibre sheet impregnated with a thermoset polyester resin or a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product, a flexible sheet of wood or a textile fabric. The facing sheets (52 and 52a) may be of any of the same materials, or or hardboard. Specification 814,739 is referred to.
