Abstract

Abstract 895,414. Welding by pressure. AEROPROJECTS Inc. April 10, 1959 [July 8, 1958], No. 12248/59. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a welding device, a magnetostrictive or piezo-electric generator 22, Fig. 9, is coupled to the workpiece 70, 72 by a cylindrical element 34 an exponentially tapered element 36 and a plate 26, the element 36 being brazed or screwed to the centre of the plate which is resonant at the working frequency. The parts 34, 36 may be screwed together or mechanically bonded or they may be formed integrally. The edge of the plate is held in contact with the workpieee. The working frequency may be between 3000 and 100,000 c/s. The plates may vary in thickness as shown in Figs. 2 to 6. The device is supported by the resonant support 38 as described in Specification 837,279. Two generators may drive the same plate, Fig. 8. The plate 26 may rotate as the work advances. The disc is arranged to vibrate with one nodal circle in which region a groove 50, Fig. 7, may be formed. The generator 22 and the two elements 34, 36 are each one half wavelength in length. The device may be used to weld parts of the same material such as aluminium, aluminium alloy, copper, steel or parts of different materials such as aluminium alloy and copper or steel. Welding may be carried out at room temperature or at higher temperature below the melting point. The welding may be carried out in the ambient atmosphere, in vacuo or in inert gas. Specification 895,413 also is referred to.
