Abstract
Abstract 1,078,758. Invalid appliances. R. GRUYELLE. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 2, 1963], No. 40139/ 64. Heading A6M. [Also in Division B8]. An apparatus for lifting an invalid off a seat comprises bell-cranks 20 which are provided with members 23 for engagement under the armpits of the invalid and which are secured to a shaft 19 rotatably mounted in brackets 13 on uprights 9, the uprights 9 being secured to a U-shaped, wheeled base 1. Operating levers 28, interconnected by shafts 27, 32, are pivoted at 30 to brackets 15 on the uprights 9 and links 25 connect the bellcranks 20 and the shaft 27. The arrangement is such that on lowering the levers 28 from the position shown to a position, Fig. 1 (not shown), in which the outer ends of the levers engage a footrest on the base 1, the shaft 27 passes through the vertical plane containing the pivots 30, and the weight of the raised invalid locks the apparatus with the members 23 in the raised position. The spacing between the bell cranks is adjustable. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the arms of the U-shaped base 1 are pivoted to the base of the U about vertical axes and are interconnected by linkages whereby the spacing of the outer ends of the arms may be varied. A sling for the invalid to sit on is suspended between the two members 23.
