Bone reconstruction, fracture repair or prosthetic mounting - provides high strength and stiffness bone repair using fibre-reinforced, resin-bonded material anchored within cavity in bone
Abstract
Abstract A bag (8), pref. constructed from short unidirectional fibres to form a woven or braided material, and using C, polyethene, glass or biodegradable fibres impregnated with a hardenable resin, pref. methylmethacrylate, is inserted into a preformed cavity in a complicated bone fracture or as part of a joint repair, e.g., hip replacement prosthesis. The bag (8) is inflated or expanded to completely fill and press against the cavity in the bone (34) by means or membrane (7) which is expanded by pumping a medium, e.g., water or air, into cavity (9) within the device. Both bag (8) and membrane (7) are attached and sealed to a mounting unit (1) of pref. metal or plastic material which can be attached to the bone by suitable fixing means, e.g., screws (13).
