Rudder position detector using pick=up coils - detecting changes in magnetic field due to movement of asymmetrical plate mounted on rotatable shaft
Abstract
Abstract This contactless transducer is used aboard ship to detect the angular position of a shaft; esp. a shaft that turns in proportion to the rudder angle. Coupled to the tiller control is a shaft (6) that rotates in a bearing in a fixed plate (7) at the base of the transducer housing (4). Surrounding the lower part of the shaft is a wire-wound coil (1) that generates an alternating magnetic field. Mounted on the shaft above the coil is a flat horizontal asymmetrical metal body (8), with a spiral shaped perimeter. The body, which is in the magnetic field of the coil (1), induces a voltage in a pick-up coil (5) mounted horizontally on the inside wall of the housing; the voltage being proportional to the angle of the shaft. Other versions of the transducer can detect non-rotating up-and-down movement or a shaft or spirally rotating up-and-down movement.
