Abstract
Abstract Products suitable for application to denture surfaces to render the dentures adhesive to gums comprise a physiologically acceptable powder or paste containing an acrylamide polymer. The powders generally contain at least 10% by weight of polymer and up to 90% of a natural gum and up to 5% of an anti-caking agent. The pastes usually contain from 10 to 45% by weight polymer, 0 to 35% of a natural gum and 55 to 90% of an hydrophobic excipient oil base. Suitable acrylamide polymers include low molecular weight anionic copolymers of acrylamide and acrylic acid, and nonionic acrylamide homopolymers of molecular weight from 5 to 6 million. Natural gums specified are karaya, tragacanth, acacia, arabic and locust bean. As anti-caking agent there may be used air-floated silica, magnesium stearate or talcum powder. The excipient oil base may be petrolatum or an animal, vegetable or mineral oil or wax. Instead of the natural gum, one or more of gelatine, starch, pectin, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose and methyl cellulose can be employed. Colouring and flavouring agents (unspecified) may additionally be present.
