Plastic optical fiber cord
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To provide high resistance to heat, to fire, and to solvent to plastic optical fiber cord by cladding an external layer of optical fiber with a vinylidene fluoride/hexafluoro-propylene copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A external layer of optical fiber having a core/clad structure is covered with a vinylidene fluride/hexafluoro propelene copolymer. An amorphous transparent polymer is preferred as the core material, and a substantially transparent polymer having a smaller refractive index than the core material is used for the clad material. Preferred content of hexafluoropropylene in the vinylidene flurode/hexafluoropropylene copolymer to be used for the external layer is >=1mol.% and <20mol.%, particularly >= 1mol.% and <10mol.%. By this constitution, plastic optical fiber having >=130 deg.C heat resistance together with reasonable flexibility and inflammability enough for keeping the characteristics of the plastic optical fiber from impairment, is obtd.
