Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce the offset in a mating surface and to secure the strength and soundness of a pressure welding boundary area by friction welding an end part and the stem part of an expanded pipe after expanding the pipe end part of a steel pipe. CONSTITUTION:The pipe is expanded by forcing a core 22 composed of a conical head and a cylindrical barrel into the steel pipe 1 held with a die 21 or by rolling the pipe with an inner roll 25 and an outer roll 26. Then, the stem part 2 which has been prepared separately is welded by friction to both ends of the expanded steel pipe. In addition, reasons for expanding the end parts of the steel pipe 1 before executing the friction welding are to increase the polar moment of inertia of area at a site corresponding to a thermal influence part near the friction welding part by expanding the pipe, to reduce the stress by torsional load and to elevate fatigue strength, and further, to correct defects in out-of-roundness by expanding the pipe, to reduce the offset between the stem and the mating surface and to secure the strength and soundness of the friction welding boundary area.
