Fluorine-containing liquid crystal compound

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R 1 is 6W12C alkoxy; R 2 is lower alkyl; l is 0 or 1; m is 0 or 1; n is 1 or 2). EXAMPLE: 4-(4'-n-Octyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoic acid (1-trifluoromethyl-3- ethoxy)propyl ester. USE: A material for large-sized display element. It exhibits ferroelectricity over a wide temperature range, has remarkable quick response and is useful as a high-density large-sized display. PREPARATION: The compound of formula I (l=1 and m=1) can be produced according to the reaction formula by reducing the compound of formula II with hydrogen in the presence of Raney-nickel, subjecting the product to saponification, optical resolution and esterification, converting the resultant compound of formula IV into the compound of formula VI according to the reaction formula, reacting the compound of formula VI with separately prepared acetylbenzoyl chloride reducing the obtained compound of formula VII and subjecting the reduction product to dehydrative condensation with a condensing agent.
