Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce the cost of the titled transducer and to facilitate the handling thereof by constituting a piezo-electric layer of a high-polymer material. CONSTITUTION:This acousto-optical mode transducer consists of the high- polymer piezo-electric layer 11 and comb-shaped electrodes 2 formed on the surface of the layer 11 and is applied, at need, with a transparent photoconductive layer on the surface thereof. The material which forms the thin high-polymer piezo-electric film 11 is exemplified by a vinylidene fluoride copolymer such as copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride or vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene, and vinylidene cyanide copolymer such as copolymer of polyvinylidene cyanide or vinylidene cyanide and vinyl acetate. Taking out of light with a low scattering loss and without disturbing the wave front of guided light is permitted if the acousto-optical mode transducer is manufactured by using the thin high-polymer piezo-electric film 11 formed by forming the thin film of such high-polymer material on a substrate having a satisfactorily smooth surface by coating method such as spin coating or vacuum deposition, then subjecting the film to a piezo-electric treatment.
