Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To remove the eccentricity of a code plate and error originating from an optical system by making error components based upon the eccentricity of the code plate to operate on two detecting means while their phase are made mutually opposite. CONSTITUTION:Two image sensors 41 and 42 are arranged in 180 deg.-shift position relation with the code plate 1 and their position relation is shifted by alpha a half the array pitch of light transmission slits 2. Thus, the image sensors 41 and 42 are arranged and then error components due to the eccentricity of the code plate 1 and error components originating from the optical system appear in the output signals of the image sensors 41 and 42 in a phase inverted state, so the angle of rotation of the code plate 1 is detected from the sum of the output signals and then those error components cancel each other, so that the detection is performed with high accuracy.
