Production of powdery zirconia
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To effectively obtain homogeneous and fine powdery zirconia having high purity by molding a mixture consisting of a powdery zircon and a mixed material contg. carbon to a molded body adjusted to have a specified bulk specific gravity, subjecting it to desiliconizing treatment at a reduced pressure and the crushing. CONSTITUTION:The powdery zircon is mixed with the material contg. carbon in a certain mixing ratio wherein the ratio of the SiO2 in the powdery zircon to the carbon in the material contg. carbon (C/SiO2) is in the range of about (0.4-2.0) expressed in terms of mol ratio. When it is necessary to add a stabilizer, about (0.5-20)mol% amt. of one or more metal oxide among MgO, CaO, Y2O3, CeO and a compd. transformed to one of these oxide with heating to the amt. of the ZrO3 contained in the zircon powder is simultaneously mixed and the obtained mixture is molded to the molded body adjusted to have (0.7-2.0) bulk specific gravity. Then the objective powdery zirconia is obtained by subjecting the molded body to heat-treating in the atomosphere decompressed to about 0.6atm and at 130-2,000 deg.C, and then by volatilizing and removing SiO2 component contained in the powdery zircon.
