Novel optically active liquid crystal compound having cyano group
Abstract
Abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [m is 2-18; n is 0 or 1; R is 2-20C alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy, etc.; A and B are single bond or formula VI (X is H, halogen or cyano), etc.]. EXAMPLE:Optically active 4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl 3-cyano-4-(1-methylheptyloxy)- benzoate. USE:A ferroelectric liquid crystal material which is one component in chiral smectic C (SC*) liquid crystal compositions usable as an inhibitor for formation of reverse domains. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is esterified to give a compound expressed by formula III, which is then reacted according to the reaction formulas to provide a compound expressed by formula IV. The resultant compound expressed by formula IV is then demethylated and reacted with a tosylated substance and then reacted with a cyanogenation agent, acidified, converted into an acid halide and then reacted with phenol to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
