Novel pyrimidine derivative

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The pyrimidine derivative of formula I (R and R' are independently 1-20C straight-chain alkyl). USE:Useful as an electro-optical display material. It exhibits SC phase over a wide temperature range and is effective as a liquid crystal material for a display cell utilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced according to the reaction formula by reacting a compound of formula II with a Vilsmeier reagent prepared from N,N-dimethylformamide and phosphorus oxychloride, reacting the product with perchloric acid (the 1st step) and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with a benzamidine of formula IV in an alcohol in the presence of a sodium alcoholate (the 2nd step).
