Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a display panel which has high density picture elements over a wide area by writing alternately signals which orient bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal of liquid crystal elements arrayed in plural rows and columns in two states at intervals of a scanning line in synchronism with the scanning signal, and controlling the continuance of the orientation states for each field. CONSTITUTION:The least significant, intermediate, and least significant digit bits of gradation data of respective picture elements A11-A44 are inputted to memories M1, M2, and M3 respectively. The data in the M1 is selected through a decoder DC and an MPX with a field switching signal and an AND gate is opened with a gate signal GT from a monostable multiplexer MM to use a clock signal CK as a row scanning signal F, thereby turning on drivers DR1-DR5 successively through a counter CNT. Data of respective rows of the M1 are writtenn in respective rows through drivers in an ON state among the DR1-DR5 together with the white signal obtained by inverting the black signal in synchronism with respective row scanning signals. A white signal is inverted in a next field to write the data from the M2. The data in the M1-M3 are displayed successively for a specific time for each field and a next frame is entered.
