Optical recording method and its device
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To enable optical recording with a low-power laser beam by changing a low-transmittance arrangement state into a high-transmittance arrangement state when a voltage higher than the threshold voltage Vth is impressed on a liq. crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal material exhibiting an instability phenomenon or an arrangement transition when the voltage exceeds the threshold voltage Vth and generating a remarkable increase in the transmittance such as a cholesteric liq. crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy of a cholesteric- nematic phase transition mode is used as the liq. crystal layer 16. A cholesteric phase 21 forms a focal conic structure 22 and is turbid in the absence of an electric field. The phase is changed into a nematic phase 23 by the electric field exceeding the electric field Eth at which a phase transition is generated. A homeotropic structure 24 wherein liq. crystal molecules are regularly arranged in the direction of the electric field is formed and a transparent state is obtained. Writing light 19 is injected into a photoconductive layer 15 from a transparent carrier 11 side on the rear surface.
