Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To make it possible to recognize a vehicle number by setting up the irradiation range of an irradiating device to a face existing a display part for the vehicle number of a vehicle and a part on a road surface near the vehicle in the irradiating device direction, irradiating the vehicle number by the irradiating device and picking up the vehicle number by an image pickup camera. CONSTITUTION:The existence of an automobile 1 is recognized by a position sensor or the like, and simultaneously with the passage of the automobile 1 through a prescribed image pickup position, flash light is irradiated from the irradiating device 4 to a prescribed range on a face existing a number plate 2 of the automobile 1 and vertical to the road 5 and a part on a forward road in the irradiating device 4 direction close to the automobile. Synchronously with the light irradiation of the device 4, the image pickup camera is driven to pickup the image of the number plate 2. Since the luminance generated by the incidence of light 6b is added to the luminance of the number plate generated only by the light 6b at the time of image pickup, the luminance of the number plate 2 observed from the camera 3 is extremely increased. Consequently, the margin of the sensitivity of the photographing camera can be expanded by a simple system and the recognition level can be improved.
