Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 is 1-18C alkyl; R2 is alkyl or aralkyl; m is 1 or 2; X is single bond, -O-, -COO- or -OCO-; Ph is 1,4- phenylene). EXAMPLE:(S)-p-(p'-octylcarbonyloxyphenyl)benzoic acid p''-(2-methylbutyl carbonyl)-phenyl ester. USE:A component of a liquid crystal composition. Some of the above compounds has chemical stability, exhibits enanthiotropic ferroelectric property over a wide temperature range and is especially useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. There are compounds forming smectic liquid crystal and usable for a memorizing display element such as thermal recording or laser recording display, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting 4'-alkylcarbonyloxybiphenylcarboxylic acid of formula II with the phenolic compound of formula III in a basic solvent such as pyridine.
