Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To display the same display pattern in more than three colors by constructing an element with the polarizing films, two liquid crystals and a neutral polarizing film. CONSTITUTION:In terms of a green color polarizing film 2, for instance, its polarizing axis is provided by deviating it from the polarizing axis of a red color polarizing film 1 by 90 deg.. A lighting beam L transmitted through the polarizing film 2 turns out to rays of light mixed with red and green colors. In a quest host type liquid crystal cell 3, a transparent segment electrode 32 in a shape corresponding to a display pattern and a common electrode 33 facing said electrode 32 are formed in the interiors of facing transparent substrates 30 and 31. Orientation films 44 and 45 are applied to the liquid crystal cell 4 so that the longitudinal axis direction of a molecule can be 45 deg. (=135 deg.) against the polarizing axes f the polarizing films 1 and 2. When a voltage satisfying the prescribed conditions is impressed on the electrodes 42 and 43, the lighting beam L is transmitted by rotating it by 90 deg.. The polarizing film 5 transmits only a polarized beam in parallel with its polarizing axis, and blocks polarized beams not in parallel with said axis. These polarizing films 1-5 compose the liquid crystal display element 6.
