Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To recognize quickly and accurately the external form of a pattern regardless of its internal form by detecting successively the continuous outer circumferential backgrounds and their boundary coordinates of the pattern to be recognized and increasing and decreasing the variable value set to each coordinate axis. CONSTITUTION:A picture input device 11 delivers a binary coded image pickup signal according to an image of a subject parts or that of a background. A microcomputer 13 receives the pickup signal and detects successively the continuous outer circumferential backgrounds and their boundary coordinates of the subject parts and increases or decreases the variable value (displacement function) set to each coordinate axis. This processing is carried out continuously for a period during which the picture elements on the continuous outer circumferential lines are extracted sequentially from the first picture element and then back to the first element again. Thus the displacement functions are obtained for all coordinates on the outer circumferential lines. The waveform of this displacement function contains plus and minus pulses and also an array of these pulses which varies according to the form pattern of the outer circumferential line. In such a way, the quick and accurate recognition of the outer form of a pattern regardless of internal form is attained.
