Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To intensify a bond between a carbon film and the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium provided with the carbon protective film on a thin magnetic metallic film layer and to improve the impact resistance and wear resistance thereof by adding a small amt. of Co or(and) Ni to said carbon film. CONSTITUTION:The thin magnetic metallic film layer consisting of iron, cobalt- nickel alloy, etc. is formed by a method such as sputtering or vacuum deposition on a base body consisting of an aluminum-magnesium alloy, polyester, etc. via an underlying layer consisting of nickel, chromium, etc. The protective film consisting of the carbon contg. at least one kind of metal selected from cobalt and nickel in a 0.1-20wt% range is formed by a method such as sputtering or ion plating on the thin magnetic metallic film layer, by which the intended magnetic recording medium is obtd. Iron may be incorporated into the protective film in addition to the metal selected from the cobalt and nickel.
