Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To intensify a bond between a protective layer and the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium having the protective layer consisting of carbon on a thin magnetic metallic layer and to improve the impact resistance, wear resistance, etc. thereof by incorporating a small amt. of iron into said carbon layer. CONSTITUTION:The thin magnetic metallic film layer consisting of iron, cobalt- nickel alloy, etc. is formed by sputtering, vapor deposition, etc. on a substrate consisting of an aluminum-magnesium alloy, polyester, etc. via an underlying layer consisting of chromium, nickel etc. The protective layer consisting of carbon contg. 0.1-20wt% iron is formed by such a method as sputtering or ion plating on the thin magnetic metallic film layer by which the intended magnetic recording medium is obtd. The resulted magnetic recording medium is adequately used as a magnetic tape, magnetic disk, etc.
