Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To accurately perform recording at the predetermined position on recording paper when the mount position of the recording paper is shifted, by providing a recording paper detection means to a carriage and moving a carriage prior to actual recording operation to detect the position and/or width of the recording paper while performing the control of a recording position according to the detection signal. CONSTITUTION:A carriage 11 is moved along the lateral direction of recording paper 3. The magnitude of a signal changes corresponding to the difference between reflectivities of a platen 1 and the recording paper 3. Because the platen 1 is black and the recording paper 3 is white, the level of the detection signal changes from ''L'' to ''H'' when a sensor 27 passes the boundary where the platen 1 is changed to the recording paper 3 and changes from ''H'' to ''L'' when said sensor 27 passes the boundary where the recording paper 3 is changed to the platen 1. The detection signal level of the sensor 27 and the count value of a counter 29 are latched by a latch circuit 30 to be stored in a recording control circuit 31. The recording control circuit 31 detects the relative positional relation of the platen 1 and the recording paper 3 and the width of the recording paper 3 to control actual recording operation on the basis of the detection signal.
