Novel hydrocarbon resin and adhesive additive formed therefrom
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:A hydrocarbon resin low in melt viscosity and odor and excellent in color, heat resistance and compatibility with other base polymers, comprising a specified hydrogenated styrenic hydrocarbon/cycloalkene copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon resin obtained by hydrogenating a copolymer comprising about 50-99mol% structure units of a styrenic hydrocarbon (e.g., styrene) and about 50-1mol% structural units of a cycloalkene (e.g., cyclopentene). Said hydrocabon resin should have a number-average MW of about 200- 10,000, an iodine value <=10 and a rate of hydrogenation of benzene nuclei <=20%. This hydrocarbon resin can be suitably used as a tackifier or a softener which is added to a hot-melt adhesive in which the base resin is an ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer or the like, or a pressure-sensitive adhesive in which the base resin is a styrene/butadiene/styrene block copolymer rubber or the like.
