Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To take out selectively the light guided in a substrate by arranging a refractive index changing layer, whose refractive index is changed when a voltage is impressed, between two base materials different in refractive index from each other and impressing a voltage to counter electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A refractive index changing layer 22 consisting of a liquid crystal whose refractive index is raised when a voltage is impressed is interposed between a base material 21 having a refractive index n1 and a base material 23 having a refractive index n2, and pairs of electrodes 24 are arranged to face each other respectively. When no voltage is impressed, an incident laser beam 26 is totally reflected in a glass plate 21 repeatedly and is taken out to the external; but when a voltage is impressed selectively to counter electrodes 24b, the laser light is emitted to the external by a recessed part 28 on a glass plate 23. Consequently, one laser beam is used to take out selectively the light to plural positions and the total reflection phenomenon is applied to obtain a high switching rise/fall ratio.
