Liquid crystal compound
Abstract
Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The optically active compound of formula (m is 1-8, preferably 2-6, especially 3-5; n is 5-14, preferably 6-12, especially 7-10; *represents asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:Optically active 4-(2-methylbutyloxy butyloxy) benxoic acid 4'- octylphyenyl ester. USE:A component of a liquid crystal composition containing an ester-type liquid crystal compound. It is an optically active liquid crystal compound exhibiting chiral smectic C* phase or H phase, stable even at a low temperature below room temperature, and suitable for the use as it is or as a multi-component mixed liquid crystal composition. It is useful as an electro-optical element utilizing the response of ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal to electric field. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be prepared by reacting optically active butanediol mono-2-methyl ether with 4-bromophenol in the presence of metallic Na, reacting the resultant compound with a Grignard reagent, and finally reacting with SO2Cl.
