Color display device

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To display a color picture with a good resolution by providing a color display device with a plurality of display elements which can change the light transmittance and the color light source which irradiates the display elements from their back and by selecting the color emitted from the color light source in synchronization with the drive of each display element. CONSTITUTION:A color display device is provided with a display element section 12 consisting of a plurality of display elements which are distributed all over the display surface and exhibit black and white display by changing light transmittance, and also with a colored light source 13 such as a fluorescent display tube which is arranged behind the display element section and which emits colored lights such as red, green and blue lights. The display element section 12 and the colored light source 13 are connected to a picture drive circuit 14 and color selection circuit 15. A control circuit 16 outputs a picture signal to the picture drive circuit 14, at the same time, it delivers to the color selection circuit 15, a control signal which is synchronized with the picture signal and which selects the color corresponding to the picture signal. Accordingly, a color picture can be obtained by combining the picture made by display elements for black and white display with the colored light source which can change to a various color, and thus the resolution and contrast are improved.
