light modulation element
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To control an optical intensity distribution of an emitted luminous flux against an optical intensity distribution of an incident luminous flux by varying a heat quantity given to a heat effect medium at every local part. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage signal is applied to heating resistors 16a, 16b-, respectively, from a conductive wire 18, a refractive index distribution is generated in a head effect medium thin layer in the vicinity of each heating resistor. This refractive index distribution is cooled by eliminating the voltage signal, and returned again to its original state having no refractive index distribution. When a luminous flux 20b from a light source 20a is made incident on an optical modulating element L.M, and an optional heating resistor 16c of the heating resistors is driven by a voltage Vi, a refractive index distribution 17 is generated, and the luminous flux which is made incident on the heating resistor 16c becomes a luminous flux 22 whose wave front has been deformed and it is emitted. A luminous flux 21 which is reflected by the surface of the heating resistor, and whose wave surface is not deformed by the refractive index distribution 17 is made to form an image by a lens 23, and shielded by a light shielding filter 24 placed in its image formed position.
