Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce a leakage signal from adjacent tracks and also to eliminate the detected output variation by providing a region with a small rate of change in magnetic resistance to a magneto-resistance effect element so as to restrict a track width. CONSTITUTION:One end of lead electrodes 6, 7 is led from a face opposite to a magnetic recording medium and coated on a track width restricting layer 16. The material for the track width restricting layer 16 is diffused into both ends of the magneto-resistance effect element 5 by applying heat treatment in this case. Then regions 17, 18 having different composition are provided on both ends of the magneto-resistance effect element 5, the rate of change in the magnetic resistance of the regions 17, 18 is lowered than that of the other parts and the track width TW is restricted clearly by the regions. Since the thickness of the track width restricting layer 16 is set equal to that of the magneto-resistance effect element 5 or less than that, neither elongation nor powder produced by wear is generated because of the sliding with a magnetic recording medium 2 thereby preventing short-circuit of electrodes.
