Substrate for magnetic disk
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a substrate for a magnetic disk having superior sliding strength and causing no adsorption on a magnetic head by making the surface of a substrate of a composite ceramic material finely uneven by chemical or physical or etching and by forming a continuous magnetic film on the uneven surface. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a substrate 8 of a composite material consisting of Al2O3 and TiC is polished to form projections each having about 0.02- 0.05mum height and about 1-2mum width by the quality difference between Al2O3 9 and TiC 10. The projections may be formed by chemical or physical etching. A continuous magnetic thin film 3 is formed on the polished surface by sputtering, plating, vacuum deposition or other method, and a protective film 4 is further formed on the film 3. The film 4 maintains the unevenness of the substrate 8. When the film 4 is coated with a lubricant 5, the lubricant 5 is held in the recesses. The surface of the resulting magnetic disk A' contacting with a magnetic head can be reduced owing to the unevenness, so the disk A' does not adsorb on the head. The wear resistance of the disk A' during CSS is improved, and since the substrate 8 is hard, the deformation of the disk A' is prevented.
