Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is C1-8 straight-chain alkyl). USE:A component for nematic liquid crystal composition. Useful for inducing levo or dextro rotation to a nematic liquid cyrstal. The compound of formula I can be used also as a so-called temperature-compensation-type liquid crystal composition having small pitch temperature dependency when combined with a compound capable of inducing dextro or levo rotation. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting the compound of formula II with a chlorination agent such as thionyl chloride, etc., and (2) reacting the resultant compound of formula III with D-(-)-alpha-phenylethyl or L-(-)-alpha-phenylethyl alcohol in the presence or absence of a dehydrochlorination agent such as pyridine.
