Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To attain the detection for track position with use of no magnetism and therefore to realize the record/reproduction with high density, by detecting the position of an information track from a change of electrostatic capacity between a conductive track information groove of a magnetic recording medium and paired electrodes of a head for magnetic record/reproduction. CONSTITUTION:For a magnetic recording medium 4, a conductive groove 7 is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 8 containing a groove of an array pattern corresponding to the information. Then a nonconductive magnetic layer 6 and a protecting layer 5 are formed over the groove 7. A head 1 contains paired electrodes 3a and 3b formed on an end face in the track direction of a magnetic head 15 for magnetic record/reproduction. In this case, the electrostatic capacity is provided between the groove 7 and electrodes 3a and 3b, respectively. This electrostatic capacity varies in response to the array pattern of the groove 7. As a result, the track follow-up is possible by detecting differentially the change of the electrostatic capacity in the form of an error signal. Furthermore the track density can be increased by reducing the width of the groove 7 and decreasing relatively the width of an electrode plate.
