Manufacture of quaternary ammonium hydroxide of high purity

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain quat. ammonium hydroxide almost free from impurities by dividing an electrolytic cell into cathode and anode chambers with a cation exchange membrane, feeding an aqueous soln. of quat. ammonium hydroxide to the anode chamber, and electrolyzing it. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell is divided into cathode and anode chambers with a cation exchange membrane. An aqueous soln. of quat. ammonium hydroxide represented by the formula (where each of R1-R4 is 1-10C alkyl, 1- 10C hydroxyalkyl, 2-10C alkoxyalkyl, aryl or hydroxyaryl) is fed to the anode chamber. Water is fed to the cathode chamber, and the aqueous soln. is electrolyzed to obtain quat. ammonium hydroxide of high purity.
