Oxidative polymerization-type water-based emulsion and its preparation
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To prepare the titled emulsion giving a tough coating film having excellent corrosion resistance, water resistance, etc. and useful as a primer for metallic material, etc., by the emulsion polymerization of a fatty acid-modified monomer, a copolymerizable compound having the function of emulsifier, and other unsaturated monomer in an aqueous medium. CONSTITUTION:The objective emulsion composed of a copolymer having a number-average molecular weight of 20,000-300,000 and dispersed in an aqueous medium is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of (A) 2-60pts.wt. of a fatty acid-modified monomer obtained by the reaction of (semi)drying oil fatty acid (e.g. linseed oil fatty acid) with an alpha,beta-ethylenic unsaturated glycidyl ester (e.g. glycidyl methacrylate) and (B) 2-20pts.wt. of a compound of formula (R1 is H, lower alkyl or halogen; R2 is H or lower alkyl; n is 4-25) (e.g. polyethylene glycol monoacrylate) and (C) other ethylenic unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the components A and B (e.g. styrene), in an aqueous medium.
