Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To shorten a processing time by converting an input signal into a multilevel signal and then coding it into a binary signal, counting the total bits of level ''1'' or ''0'' and the circumferential length of a pattern, and deciding on whether binary-coding retrial is necessary or not and varying the threshold value of binary coding. CONSTITUTION:An image of a multilevel signal obtained by a photoelectric conversion part 1 is coded into a binary signal through a line buffer 2 and a binary- coding circuit 3 to store the binary signal in the character pattern memory of a detection and segmentation part 3. The binary-coded image, on the other hand, is sent to a binary-coding control part 3b. The binary-coding control part 3b counts the total number of bits corresponding to black to find the area of the black part and also counts black bits constituting a character line edge to find the circumferential length of the character from its input to the end. When the binary coding is retried from the obtained area and circumferential length, a retry command is supplied to the segmentation part 3 and a new threshold value is set in the binary coding circuit 3a. When the binary coding is normal, normalization 4 is performed and the result is compared with the contents of a dictionary 6 to perform recognition 5. Thus, the recognition rate is improved.
