3,4-difluoro-4'-substituted biphenyl

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 3,4-difluoro-4'-substituted biphenyl shown by the formula I (R is 1-15C alkyl or alkoxy). EXAMPLE:3,4-Difluoro-4'-octylbiphenyl. USE:One component of liquid crystal composition. Low-viscosity, showing positive dielectric anisotropy, useful for improving display of liquid crystal especially at low temperature. PROCESS:3,4-Difluorobromobenzene shown by the formula II is reacted with metal Mg in tetrahydrofuran to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reacted with a 4-substituted cyclohexanone shown by the formula IV to give a compound shown by the formula V. This compound is dehydrated with KHSO4 to give a compound shown by the formula VI, which is further dehydrated with chloranil to give a compound shown by the formula I .
